Abstract

This paper explores and determines the important factors associated with child injury occurrence in Bangladesh to gain an understanding of the association between socio-demographic factors, different risk factors, environmental & caring factors with different types of child injury using the data from The Bangladesh Health and Injury Survey (BHIS) 2003. The children are defined in this study as infants and children of all ages, up to their 18th birthday (0-17 years old). The bivariate analysis suggests that the socio-demographic characteristics, risk factors, environmental and caring factors of the injured children considered here are mostly statistically significant i.e. Sex, age, Place of residence, Activities of child prior to injury occurrence, Types of injury, Type of road user, Mode of transport, Swimming ability, Accompanying person prior to drowning, Activity before drowning, Same level fall, How burnt by hot liquid, Activity prior to burn injury. The logistic regression analysis also demonstrates the significant risk factors of child injury. This study employs mainly statistical methods to identify the factors affecting child injury in Bangladesh using some sophisticated techniques so that policy makers can make the recommendations for the policy implementation to reduce child injuries and identify the ways of controlling injuries and prescribe better injury prevention strategy.

Key words: Child Injury, Bangladesh, Risk factors, Logistic regression
