Abstract

Coaches need to become familiar with foundational knowledge on sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), while becoming confident, competent, and proficient in their emergency action plans for using CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] and an AED [automated external defibrillators] to provide immediate and appropriate care to athletes. This article refers to a 2011 position statement that examines the importance of a coach's proper emergency response to SCA in athletic programs. The purpose of this article is to provide coaches with mock scenarios that will help expose them to SCA events and test their knowledge on how to provide immediate and appropriate care for this potentially catastrophic condition.
