Abstract

This article describes the design and implementation of a safe route to school policy in the borough of Bexley, London, UK. The school in this scheme is situated beside a road named Yarnton Way, which was a dual carriageway. With the erection of a new primary school alongside the senior school, action to make the road safer had to be taken during a single summer holiday period. Schools and local residents were consulted on the plan and it was decided to reduce the width of the carriageway, instal roundabouts to mark the area as a residential zone, add a pedestrian crossing and provide laybys near the school entrances. Additional funding had to be found for the project. A vehicle-activated speed sign was introduced outside the primary school and proved effective at reducing vehicle speeds. KW: SR2S
