Abstract

The variable message signs posted at more than 60 locations in the city flip automatically according to the settings on enclosed clock controls. The signs which provide a variety of pictorial and worded messages, are the key point in the"safe routes" developed to 21 elementary schools. Speed reduction at these sites during the period children come and go to and from school is handled by 82 Varicom Cycle Control Devices. These signs are located at 41 critical points on the safe routes. When the motorized panels are open, they all read "School Speed Limit 20". The sign faces are made of Scotchlite high intensity reflective sheeting. When the signs are closed during the hours children are not traveling, they display a variety of pictorial and printed messages. Each variable message sign cost $400 and a typical complete installation averaged $1400. Observations indicate that the plan is successful. KW: SR2S
