Abstract

Driver modelling is very crucial to the design and validation of active safety systems of vehicles in their development phase. This study presents a new objective in modelling the driver that can be used in the development of advanced braking systems, such as the brake-by-wire system. The model considers the real interaction between the driver and the steering-wheel torque under special braking conditions. The crossover model is adopted in this paper to characterize the real handling actions of drivers recorded in field braking tests. Different handling characteristics can be represented by specifying different model parameters identified from the test data. This study details a method for identifying the parameters of the driver model and the analytical simulation results obtained and presents a comparative analysis of the handling characteristics of various drivers.
