Abstract

he suicide rate among US youths living in rural counties is nearly double that seen in urban areas, a new study has found.

In the study, reported in the journal Pediatrics, researchers looked at suicide rates among US people aged 10 to 24 from 1996 to 2010. During this period 66 595 youths died by suicide. The most common methods were death by firearm (51.1%), hanging or suffocation (33.9%), and poisoning (7.9%), and other means accounted for 7.1%.
