Abstract

A recent article in The American Journal of Sports Medicine entitled “Protective Equipment and Player Characteristics Associated With the Incidence of Sport-Related Concussion in High School Football Players,” by McGuine, Hetzel, McCrea, and Brooks,3 sheds light on risk factors of sport-related concussions (SRCs) in high school football players. This article examines the role of protective equipment (helmet and mouth guard) and player characteristics in preventing SRCs. Player characteristics as well as equipment type was reported by certified athletic trainers (ATCs) at each high school in the study.
