Abstract

Driver performance is studied under different conditions of night visibility and under the impact of various highway marking systems. The motorists taking part in the study were familiar with the interchange chosen for the study. Tests were conducted under five conditions: (1) full illumination, (2) dark, (3) standard delineation, (4) experimental reflectorization, and (5) combined illumination and reflectorization. The overall results of this study suggest that reflectorization as well as illumination can be an effective means of reducing driving problems related to nighttime visibility conditions. A carefully planned reflective treatment is easily followed.
