Abstract

The report describes Tai-pau gangs and characterizes their members and group activities. Erikson's theory of self-identity and identity diffusion is used to explain the motivation for the gang activities which were characterized by a strong code demanding loyalty and toughness. Assaults (often upon police officers) are conducted by bicycle-riding gang members dressed in American coyboy costumes using studded belts, chains and knives.
