Abstract

The repeal of federal speed limit guidelines gave states renewed discretion in setting highway speed limits. States adopting higher speed limits tend to be more sparsely populated and politically conservative, while liberal and densely populated states usually retain speed limits at or near 55 miles per hour (mph).
