Abstract

In Europe, the revision of ECE-R29 has been discussed in the working party (GRSP) for the harmonization of cab strength tests and more effective test method for cab strength. The United Kingdom proposed to add a new test method (UK proposal) to ECE-R29 in GRSP. In particular, test D in the UK proposal is a new frontal impact evaluation using a cylindrical impactor. A major deformation of the cab is expected with comparatively low energy in test D. However, there is no discussion about the correlation between the evaluation by the pendulum test and the injury factor of the truck driver in actual accidents. Therefore, we conducted a pendulum test based on Test D to investigate the performance of a Japanese truck, and compared its results with real accidents. The deformation mode of the cab was found to differ between the pendulum test and real accidents. It is also necessary to discuss the evaluation method based on human tolerance.
