Abstract

This paper describes the system concept of an intelligent night vision system. The system aims to support the driver in reducing vehicle-pedestrian accidents at night time. Typical pedestrian accident scenarios have been analysed for Japanese driving situations. Based on this analysis a night vision system has been developed to detect crossing pedestrians and those walking on the road by using stereo far infrared cameras. The system detects these pedestrians by calculating the relative moving vectors or position of the vehicle as well as recognized size and shape. When the system detects a pedestrian, a highlighted image is shown in a Head-up Display.
