Abstract

The generation of high dynamic forces in the steering linkage of a prototype off-road vehicle is investigated. A simple mathematical model of the suspension is used to examine the suspension vibration modes and their damping. An axle roll mode is found to be very lightly damped. Dynamic tests on the steering system are described. Two additional vibration modes are identified which contribute to high forces in the steering linkage. A simple model of the suspension and steering vibration behaviour is developed, and validated with measurements from the vehicle running on a test track. The effects of modifications to the vehicle are predicted using the validated model, and measured results from a modified vehicle are given.
