Abstract

Public transport must take into account the increasing proportion of the UK population that are elderly and disabled. Research into the specific design needs of the elderly led to the formulation of recommendations regarding step heights, handrails, gangway width, seat pitch, positioning of bells, etc. Analysis shows that buses can be modified to meet most of the specifications at moderate cost. If buses are built to the specification, the cost is much less.
