Abstract

A great deal of research and development in the automotive industry has gone into the discovery of new methods of monitoring the condition of vehicle components and vehicle performance. Research and development in the telecommunications field has produced flexible information transfer systems which can be used in vehicles. Similarly, research and development in electronics engineering has meant a revolution in display technology for both visual and audible displays. The application of these many areas of development in new technology to vehicle means that the driver of a modern vehicle can now be informed about the state of the vehicle and its components, about traffic conditions, and about the environment in which the vehicle is being used, and can receive information unrelated to the vehicle but of relevance to the driver. Moreover, other users of the vehicle can receive information about the condition of the vehicle and other relevant information. Refs.
