Abstract

The vehicle is represented as a 7 degree of freedom system (longitudinal, lateral, yaw and the four wheels' spin degrees of freedom). The omitted degrees of freedom (pitch, roll, camber stiffness effect, roll-steer of rear axle, steering compliance,. . . etc) are accounted for approximately on the basis of quasi-static calculations. The effect of tire-traction parameters (longitudinal and lateral stiffness) and vehicle speed on vehicle response are investigated. A new response term called 'delay response time' could be established. Behavior of this term with respect to the front and rear lateral stiffness is investigated. The results obtained show that, for better directional response, the delay response time must be minimized. In order to achieve this condition, the rear tire's lateral stiffness must be greater than that of the front.
