Abstract

Automotive safety can be secured only when humans, vehicles and their environment are well balanced. Many improvements have been made since the invention of the automobile in the running performance, durability and economy of vehicles. But studies of traffic environments, and in particular developments in active safety, were started as late as the 1960s. This paper takes up and discusses the most important issues, namely the driver's field of view and vehicle stability and operability, and refers to the driving aid devices which are expected to be developed in the near future.
