Abstract

In this study, failure probability of architectural (laminated and monolithic) glazing subjected to blast loading is investigated. An empirical formula based on free air explosive blast wave of the positive phase is adapted to simulate loading due to an explosion on ground. The glass plies and PVB interlayer are treated as elastic and viscoelastic, respectively. A three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic finite element code (LS-DYNA3D) is used to conduct the stress analysis. Based on the cumulative damage theory, two-parameter Weibull distribution is adopted to describe the cumulative probability of failure of monolithic glazing and inner glass ply of laminated glazing. Effects of blast load parameters, glazing geometry and material on the failure probability are presented. The analytical results on failure probability of architectural glazing can be used to mitigate hazard from broken glazing due to blast loading.
