Abstract

Whether or not the threat of punishment deters crime is one of the oldest and most controversial issues in criminal justice. The purpose of this article is to familiarize other social scientists with the theoretical models, data sets, and statistical methods used by economists who have analyzed the effect of the threat of punishment on criminal behavior.
