Abstract

In order to design more economical pavements it is necessary to use the most accurate input parameters possible. Tyre/pavement interface stresses are one of the important inputs in any pavement design system and therefore requires appropriate definition. This paper describes a prototype Vehicle-Road Surface Pressure Transducer Array (VRSPTA) system developed for the measurement of the tyre/pavement interface stresses of a moving wheel load. It illustrates that the tyre/pavement stresses caused by a moving wheel can be adequately measured in vertical, transverse and longitudinal directions. As this was an experimental system, which contains some inaccuracies, certain improvements to the current system are suggested.
