Abstract

Dynamic behaviour of various 5, 6 7 and 8-axle log hauling vehicles is investigated through computer simulation in this paper. A comprehensive dynamic simulation model is developed and results predicted by the simulation model for a 5-axle tractor/pole trailer (with outriggers) and a 6-axle tractor-jeep/pole trailer (with outriggers) are compared with those measured in field tests for purposes of model validation. The comparison of measured and predicted results shows gratifyingly good agreement. To provide assessments of the design of various configurations of logging trucks when their stability, control and offtracking are of concern, the developed simulation models are used to examine the following performance measures: rearward amplification ratio, load transfer ratio, transient high-speed offtracking, understeer coefficient, static rollover threshold and low-speed friction demand.
