Abstract

This report concerns the installation of a "road diet" treatment on 34 city blocks of the most important north-south roadway in Ocean City, New Jersey. This treatment had been recommended to better accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists into the users of the roadway.

The evaluation found that vehicluar speeds were reduced -- most noticeably of high-speed "outliers". Pedestrians and bicyclists have been taking advantage of the new facilities, and residents have requested implementation of the road diet treatment be extended to include sections of the roadway near where they live and work.

Another version of this paper was published in the Institute of Transportation Engineers Journal.
