Abstract

This paper investigates the operational performance of the entering traffic stream in relation to the circulating traffic stream for a two-lane roundabout system. This relationship is demonstrated by binomial function with different coefficients depending on the lane-by-lane analysis. Five different functions were established based on entry-circular pairs of lanes: curb-outer, curb-island, median-outer, median-island, and total entering-circulating flows. The correlations between these different traffic stream flows were examined. The relationship between two different streams was presented in the maximum entry/circular ratio. These ratios were found to be 0.42 for the median/island (most critical movement), and 0.92 for the curb/outer (least conflicting movement), and 0.62 for both curb/island and median/outer flows.
