Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to identify pedestrian behaviour in mixed traffic streets, using the video-analysis system ViVAtraffic. Beside the traditional pedestrian traffic characteristics (density, speed and flow), several other indicators are developed in order to analyse pedestrian behaviour in such mixed traffic situations. These parameters include: number of conflicts, swerving lateral distance, swerving longitudinal distance, and number of stops. In addition, a microscopic simulation model which is based on a social force mathematical model is used. The main aim of the simulation is to have a broader view of the impact of different hindrance levels on the fundamental characteristics as well as on the conflicts of the pedestrian movement. Finally, the analysts of the simulation results is used to classify the pedestrian level-of-service under different mixed traffic conditions with the aim of enhancing the quality of pedestrian movements in such streets.
