Abstract

This paper presents a case-study of the installation of a series of pedestrian ramps. Six sets of ramps were installed, in the summer of 1988, on a fairly busy dual-carriageway road outside the main Shopping Centre in Milton Keynes. The road had previously had a poor accident record, particularly for pedestrians. The paper presents the changes associated with the installation of the ramps in accidents, vehicle and pedestrian flows, pedestrian behaviour and vehicle speeds. It describes also the changes in the bus services associated with the installation of the ramps. The findings from a questionnaire on people's attitudes to, and understanding of, the ramps are presented. Finally, the paper discusses the stability over time of the changes observed following the installation of the ramps.
