Abstract

The effects of traffic barriers on pedestrians are discussed in two linked papers. In this first paper problems arising in seeking to define and measure traffic barriers are considered, following which the various measures and methods available and their applicability are reviewed. The subsequent paper will present results from the application of some of these methods on main roads in Edinburgh, and draw implications for their use in practice.
