Abstract

It can be hypothesized that where an accident blackspot is treated, drivers will be subjected to fewer 'near-misses' at that site, and consequently will be less aware of the need for caution. This reduced awareness may persist for some distance downstream (it may also affect the driver as he approaches the site if he uses the route frequently), and consequently the risk of an accident in the area surrounding the blackspot may be increased. The net effect may be visualized as a 'migration' of accidents from the blackspot toward neighboring sites when the blackspot is treated. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the accident frequencies associated with a sample of treated blackspots and with neighboring sites, and to attempt to detect whether accident migration actually occurred, and if so, to what extent.
