Abstract

A survey was made in 1983 to determine whether the pattern of pedestrian risk in crossing certain busy streets in West London established in an earlier study in 1962 had altered, and, if so, in what way. It was found that the pattern of risk on the roads in West London that were surveyed is substantially the same as it was 20 years ago, although the overall level of risk has decreased. Pedestrian crossings remain the safest places at which to cross the roads, and the areas near to light-controlled crossings at junctions the most dangerous. Previously, it was considered that much of the safety benefit of crossings was being lost through the high-risk areas adjacent to the crossings; today, this conclusion only applies to traffic signals.
