Abstract

Knowledge of the mean, variance and distribution of vehicle speed in parking lots is essential in the understanding of parking systems. This information is required for safety analysis, capacity calculations and 'level of service' measurement, and is a fundamental in the modeling of vehicle flow on parking networks. Yet detailed information on the expected speed of vehicles and the impact of parking network geometry on speeds is difficult to find. This paper presents the results of a study into parking vehicle speeds. The study investigates speeds along a route and the interaction between the speed and the geometric characteristics describing parking lanes. Typical values of means, standard deviations and distributions are determined.
