Abstract

The London-to-Horsham railway line passes through Crawley Town Centre and crosses Brighton Road approximately 15 metres to the south of the gyratory where there is an at-grade level crossing. Owing to the close proximity of the level crossing to the signalised gyratory it was necessary to design a system to integrate the operation of the traffic signals with the level crossing. This paper describes the mode of operation of the level crossing, the options available to achieve the desired level of control and how this has been achieved, together with a review of the operational performance of the gyratory to date.
