Abstract

The effect of the 55 mph speed limit and motor vehicle fatality reduction was studied by the application of statistical techniques to the Utah fatality data. The analysis of variance technique was used to compare the data on the basis of year effect since the 55 mph speed limit was enacted in January 1974 and thus provided a means to determine whether fatality reductions in 1974 and 1975 were statistically significant or due to chance.
