Abstract

Tactile markings were developed at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory to enable blind and partially sighted pedestrians to locate themselves on the correct side of segregated shared cycle/ pedestrian routes. The markings were installed at six sites which were monitored in use both for their effectiveness in guiding blind and partially sighted people through a shared facility and also for advantages and disadvantages of installation and durability. It was found that the tactile markings effectively guided 88% of blind and partially sighted trial subjects along the pedestrian side of a footway converted to shared pedestrian/cycle use.
