Abstract

The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) is the non-ministerial Government department that registers, inspects and reports on day care providers in England, including childminders, nurseries and playgroups. Ofsted also inspects and reports on nursery education. The 2006 Ofsted report Early Years: Safe and Sound on registered day care found that the great majority of day care providers meet the National Standards and 87% of those assessed as inadequate became satisfactory following Ofsted inspection and intervention.
