Abstract

A hybrid modeling technique is developed to simulate the door/occupant interaction in the FMVSS 214 side impact test. Using the lumped-mass to model the SID and finite elements to model the door, this approach provides an efficient analytical tool with sufficient details for door design applications. Three door design applications involving door padding, and armrest design and a side airbag, illustrate the feasibility of the model.
