Abstract

The study clarifies that a reduction of injury severity can be expected by the implementation of an airbag in the vehicle. In addition to the safety belt, a driver's airbag fitted in the steering wheel provides a further safety potential. The furthermore demonstrates the extensive effectivity of the side airbag. The study does however emphasize that an optimum occupant side protection can only be achieved when the upper as well as the lower part of the door is equipped with one or two airbags. The results of this study reveal that optimum occupant safety calls for the development of an intelligent trigger concept for various airbags. A one or two stage gas generator could be used, depending on the grade of accident severity.
