Abstract

In this work we investigated the injury risk to vulnerable road users in accidents involving off-road vehicles. The paper focuses on partner protection in car-to-car side impacts. The tests were performed according to the EEVC side impact test procedure. Where appropriate, the movable barrier was substituted by an off-road vehicle. The last test was performed to investigate the state of the art of the protection afforded by an off-road vehicle when impacted by a car of the same kind. Test results show that the injury risk to the passengers of the off-road vehicles in side collisions is low when impacted by a normal passenger car. In a side collision with another off-road vehicle, the impacted vehicle can be overthrown due to its high center of gravity. When normal vehicle is hit by an off-road vehicle, the risk of injury to the passenger in the impacted has clearly been found to be higher than in an impact with a normal car. As the results demonstrated, this is mainly due to the stiff front face and not so much to the high mass of the off-road vehicle. Off-road vehicles therefore offer poor partner protection in side collisions.
