Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the problem awareness of young people, concerning the consumption of legal and illegal drugs. 205 pupils from years 9 and year 12 of secondary schools in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were given a specifically designed questionnaire. At the age of 15 the percentage of smokers is the same as that of age 18: almost 50 %. Girls represent a higher percentage than boys. The smoking ban at schools has virtually no influence on problem awareness as 86 % of year 9 pupils smoke on school premises. On average, nearly 88 % drink alcohol in their leisure time. Alcopops are very popular, especially at parties, other celebrations or in discos and usually at the weekends. Behaviour patterns in road traffic were tested with specific questions regarding driving or passenger behaviour. Results show that 71 % would not drive a car after drinking a relatively small amount of alcohol (one or two beers). They would however, let themselves be driven by someone who had had the same amount if they had faith in them and there was no other way of getting home. 81 % would not be passengers to a driver who had drunk a larger amount of alcohol (3-5 beers).
