Abstract

Laser-triangulation sensor plays an important role in vehicle dynamics by increasing vehicle safety and improving handling characteristics. The physical operating principle known as laser triangulation utilizes a beam of red laser light, which is projected onto the road surface. The beam is reflected by the road surface and focused onto a position-sensitive Charge Coupled Device (CCD) array. The efficacy of non-contact optical sensors becomes more pronounced when multiple sensors are joined together in a network, as in the Pitch and Roll System. The position data of each optical sensors are measured relative to the ground, whereas Inertial Navigation Systems are referred to an artificial horizon. An important parameters in the set-up and optimization of vehicle handling is camber angle and its dynamic variation in each driving maneuver. Corrsys-Datron Laser Height Sensors for the first time offer the opportunity to truly measure camber angle dynamically.
