Abstract

The latest developments in passive safety standards for road lighting columns, and the complexities that are faced on the testing procedures are discussed. The BS EN 12767: 2000 standard is used for the passive safety of support structures for road equipments. The elements of the passive safety rating includes the speed class, energy absorption, and vehicle component safety. The test and measurement that were done include impact speed, theoretical head impact velocity (THIV), exit speed, and vehicle behavior after impact. The highway engineers are left with the choice of selecting the passive safety rating, based on the standards, which deals with the testing and rating of structures. The choice of occupant safety level should preferably be the highest available within the range of speed class and energy absorption choice. All standards are advisory and provides the best practice, the practice of which gives some security against possible litigations for damage and negligence.
