Abstract

A practical CAE process to reduce vehicle weight was presented. In the engineering design phase, the BIW normal mode and static stiffness design optimization were done by using design sensitivity analysis (DSA). Then, several optimization methods were proposed once the parts thickness normalization and process feasibility review were done. These methods were verified with structure crashworthiness, usually by frontal and side impact simulations, to meet regulations and cooperation in design guidelines. Finally, a reasonable design was selected with the assured structure strength, the satisfied safety, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance. One numerical example presented showed that the car was 6.1% lighter than the baseline model.
