Abstract

Centerline rumble strips (CLRS) have been proven to reduce head-on collision and opposing-direction sideswipe crashes. Injuries in these types of accidents have been reduced by 25%. In the United States, 38 states use or are considering the use of CLRS. In Canada, the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia are using CLRS. In Alberta, CLRS is used in no-passing zones on two-lane roads with posted speeds of 60 miles per hour or more. In Saskatchewan, CLRSs have been installed recently as a pilot project where a two-lane road transitions to a four-lane road. Finally in British Columbia, CLRSs are being considered on undivided rural two-, three-, and four-lane roads in no-passing zones.
