Abstract

Research conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in association with Astucia for increasing driving safety at night, is discussed. The specific behavior of the driver and effects of introducing new technologies to the driven vehicles was analyzed using TRL's full mission driving simulator. Participants were asked to analyze if the introduction of actively illuminated studs on rural A roads, has any effect on driver's behavior that may lead to improved road safety. It was observed that the UK rural roads could be made safer by use of new type of cats eye that improve delineation of the road layout for driving at night and in poor visibility conditions. Result shows that active studs improve driver's road positioning particularly on bends, increase the visibility and driver awareness of the road configuration ahead.
