Abstract

A working group of scientists, engineers, and physicians from six countries was assembled in 1997 to address the human factors issues surrounding the new class of high performance fighter aircraft - those that are capable of thrust vectoring control (TVC) and post-stall maneuvering (PSM). Issues addressed by the group ranged from ergonomics, physiology, and situational awareness to aeronautical/airframe agility, systems agility, and operational agility. Pilots from four of the countries represented in the working group were surveyed on issues concerning pilot acceptance of agile aircraft and potential problems they felt the agile environment spawned. The results of the two-year project were presented at the Aerospace Medical Association meeting in May 1999. A lecture series on the topic is planned for 2000 with sites selected in Germany, the UK, and the US (Wright-Patterson AFB, 19-20 October 2000). This summarizes the findings of the RTO Working Group (WG) 27.
