Abstract

The rigidity of piers for long-span rigid frame bridges is studied by finite element method in this paper. Large numbers of design data of piers are collected for the long-span rigid frame bridges which have been built. The width of the double thin-wall pies in the longitudinal direction of bridge is deduced to satisfy the flexibility. The spacing of the double thin-wall piers derived from unbalanced moment in construction is deduced. Through comparison and classifying, the results indicate that the types of piers, their design parameters and the number of tie-girders vary with the span and the height of piers. The relationship of the internal forces, the displacement and the stability coefficient to the type of piers, the design parameters of piers and the number of tie-girders are summarized.
