OBJECTIVE:
The intent of this report by the Centers for Disease Control was to more effectively target violence-prevention programs for youths in New York City.
METHODOLOGY:
The authors employed a quasi-experimental design by sampling 9th and 12th grade students in the New York City Public School system during June of 1992. The sample was stratified according to the presence (19) or absence (96) of metal detector programs in the schools. Weekly assessments were made in schools via security staff who randomly spot-checked students with their own metal detector equipment. Self-reported data were obtained form 1399 students in 15 schools (3 with and 12 without metal detectors).
FINDINGS/DISCUSSION:
Among the students surveyed during the 1991-92 school year, 36.1% reported being threatened with physical harm, 24.7% were involved in a physical fight (any location) and 21% reported having carried a weapon more than once in the 30 days prior to the survey (one third of these included handguns). Although the students who attended schools with metal detectors were less likely to have carried a weapon in school (7.8% versus 13.6%), they were just as likely to carry a weapon anywhere (21.6% versus 21.2%). The authors concluded that violence reflected the personal attitudes of the students and their families.
AUTHORS' RECOMMENDATIONS:
The authors suggested that the efforts of schools, community organizations, parent groups, teachers, state agencies and local agencies needed to be coordinated for maximum effectiveness. They also recommended that parents be taught the skills for modifying their childrens' social values, attitudes and behaviors.
