Abstract

During the period 1980 through June 1984 there were 43 cases of occupational injuries registered caused by explosions of tyres and rims in Sweden according to the register of occupational injuries and 21 serious cases known from other sources. Explosions and near-explosions were registered during eight months within the tyre industry TIRECO AB. There were two near-injury occasions per workshop during a follow-up period of less than one year. Enclosing in a cage the wheel being inflated might be an effective method of reducing the risk of serious injury. A Swedish protective cage was tested experimentally and in real life. An occupational safety standard will be set up in 1985 by the Swedish Board of Occupational Health and Safety.
