Abstract

The policy framework and analysis of integrated public safety and highway operations are discussed. It is suggested that new federal transportation policies can establish a foundation of institutional, procedural and technical solutions to foster greater integration of public safety and transportation operations to provide enhanced emergency services and improved traffic incident management. Crash mitigation and traffic incident management are two strategic approaches to transportation operations which can save lives and relieve the growing traffic congestion caused by traffic incidents.
