Abstract

The development of light-emitting diode traffic signal modules by the Californian Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is discussed. The statewide conversion from incandescent lights to LEDs was speeded up due to the energy crisis. Caltrans has purchased more than 230,000 units for deployment at signalized intersections and ramp meters and flashing beacons. The result of Caltrans's efforts is a high-quality, cost-effective product that improves the reliability of the safety systems in place along the state's roadways.
