Abstract

A research study of human and social factors in highway lighting was carried out. Spillover light that illuminated properties or businesses adjacent to highways in Ottawa was studied to investigate attitudes and relationships to photometric measures. More than two-thirds of households had no objections to highway spillover light. Surveyed businesses found spillover light desirable mainly for reasons including safety, security and reduction in the cost of their own lighting systems.
