Abstract

The attitudes and behaviors of pedestrians and drivers as observed in several focus group sessions held by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in late 2001 are described. The suggestions, based on the observations, for improving pedestrian safety are discussed. The pedestrian safety campaign, arranged by the FWHA, was completed in December 2002. To improve pedestrian safety, engineers and planners were asked to think of pedestrian accomodation and safety in designing roadways and other transportation facilities.
